An intensive brainstorming event engages Western Australia's top developers and data professionals to improve emergency communications.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) is partnering with the WA Data Science Innovation Hub for the 2023 Emergency WA Hackathon.

Emergency WA, the State's official emergency information source, is undergoing a major upgrade to provide faster, more personalised and targeted alerts.

Hackathon participants will develop innovative solutions to improve emergency communications, tackling challenges such as providing detailed information and translating messages.

Teams will explore data-driven technologies such as artificial intelligence to enhance the new alert platform, including features such as automated alerts and predictive modelling.

Challenges include improving interactions for people with disabilities, translating notifications, contextual alerts based on location, and automated alerts using data trends.

A panel of experts will judge the solutions and award cash prizes of up to $2,500.
