In a significant move, local governments in the Perth and Peel regions will receive a total of $591,839.32 through the Urban Greening Grants Program.
The program, overseen by the Western Australian Local Government Association and supported by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, aims to assist local governments with tree planting and understorey vegetation initiatives through two rounds of funding.
Beneficiaries of the first round of the program include:
- City of Bayswater;
- City of Belmont;
- City of Gosnells;
- City of Joondalup;
- Shire of Kalamunda;
- Shire of Murray;
- City of Perth;
- City of Rockingham;
- City of South Perth;
- City of Stirling;
- City of Swan; and
- Shire of Waroona.
The first round of funding will facilitate the planting of more than 9,000 trees and almost 30,000 understorey species between May and July.
Urban canopy and understorey vegetation play a vital role in cooling our streets and homes by providing shade, supporting biodiversity and creating natural environments that promote health and well-being.
Guidelines for the second round of applications will be released in April, encouraging local governments across Perth and Peel to get involved in this transformative initiative.
