A Newcastle startup, EM Energy, is set to fast-track its commercialization of a pioneering technology that turns organic waste into green hydrogen with the help of a $50,000 grant from the MVP Ventures Program.
The technology, called the Organic Hydrogen Electrolyser Cell (OHEC), produces hydrogen from organic materials without needing energy or heat in the process—an innovation that could significantly transform the clean energy landscape. Currently, hydrogen is mainly produced from fossil fuels, but this new method aims to change that by offering a more sustainable and environmentally friendly approach.
EM Energy is conducting tests on this technology at the University of Newcastle, working to validate the process and further develop its commercial potential. The funding will also help the company secure international patents for the OHEC technology, opening the door for further investment.
The MVP Ventures Program is designed to assist early-stage startups and small-to-medium enterprises in New South Wales by funding innovative products and processes that have the potential to drive economic growth. Applications are now open for the 2024/25 funding round.
