Queensland's $500 million solar farm: Lighting up a sustainable future

Queensland is taking a major step towards sustainability with the start of construction on a landmark $500 million solar farm near Gladstone. Led by ACCIONA Energía, this monumental project heralds a new era in Queensland's renewable energy landscape.

Located in Aldoga, just 20 kilometres north-west of Gladstone, the Aldoga Solar Farm will be a beacon of clean energy, boasting an impressive array of up to 820,000 solar modules with a remarkable capacity of 480 megawatts peak. Located in the Gladstone State Development Area (SDA), the project underlines Queensland's unwavering commitment to renewable energy development, job creation and economic growth.

With a strong focus on local procurement, the Aldoga Solar Farm promises $150 million in opportunities for local businesses, paving the way for the creation of up to 350 jobs during construction and supporting up to 10 full-time positions once operational. In addition, ACCIONA Energía's Community Benefits Programme pledges an annual injection of $120,000 into local initiatives, including scholarships and small grants, promoting community development and empowerment.

Scheduled to be fully operational by mid-2026 and with a 30-year lifespan, the Aldoga Solar Farm is a key part of Queensland's renewable energy journey. Specifically, all of the electricity generated by the farm will power Stanwell Corporation's Central Queensland Hydrogen Project (CQ-H2), Queensland's largest renewable hydrogen initiative, which aims to supply renewable hydrogen to international markets and domestic consumers.

In line with Queensland's ambitious renewable energy and climate change targets, the Aldoga Solar Farm epitomises the State's unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable progress. As Queensland continues its transition to a greener future, initiatives like the Aldoga Solar Farm will serve as catalysts for prosperity, driving economic growth and environmental sustainability.
