High school students across Queensland now have the opportunity to kick-start their careers in the energy sector with a new cadetship program from Ergon Energy and Energex. The program is designed to provide regional and remote students with the chance to gain valuable hands-on experience and formal training in the state’s energy industry.
The cadetships will be available at up to 55 depots across Queensland, from Cooktown in the north to Mount Isa in the west. Students will complete weekly online workshops and practical days at TAFE Queensland, learning key technical skills for the electricity distribution and energy services sectors. Cadets will also receive real-world experience at local depots, where they will gain essential workplace safety knowledge, learn how to use power tools, interpret site plans, and complete project handovers.
This expanded program follows a successful pilot in South West Queensland and is aimed at preparing students for a range of roles in the growing energy industry. By the end of the program, cadets will have earned a Certificate II in Electrotechnology and a General Safety Induction course (White Card), giving them the qualifications needed to pursue a career in the energy sector.
