Victoria has reached a significant milestone in improving mobile connectivity, with the completion of 170 resilience upgrade projects to strengthen the state’s telecommunications network. These upgrades are aimed at ensuring communities remain connected during power outages or emergencies.
One of the recent upgrades took place at Mount Taylor in East Gippsland, where a Telstra mobile tower was fitted with a 12-hour battery backup, extended critical power, and installed generators as part of the resilience program. These improvements are designed to help the region stay connected, especially during severe weather events such as storms.
The resilience program is also focusing on preparing infrastructure for bushfire seasons by removing vegetation and installing heat-resistant shields to protect key telecommunications sites. The overall program, part of the Connecting Victoria initiative, includes over 60 projects in East Gippsland alone, with more than half already completed.
By mid-2026, the Connecting Victoria program aims to deliver more than 1,200 mobile and 150 broadband projects statewide, providing better coverage and more reliable communication for rural and regional communities.
