A major milestone has been reached with the installation of battery systems at Kwinana Battery Stage Two, marking a significant step towards Western Australia's future energy goals of clean, reliable and affordable energy.
Synergy has installed containerised battery systems at what will be WA's largest grid-connected battery energy storage system, providing 200 megawatts of power with 800 MW hours of energy storage capacity.
When complete, the new battery system will have the capacity to power approximately 370,000 average WA homes for approximately four hours.
The Kwinana Battery Stage Two construction phase has already created more than 160 jobs and is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
With an investment of more than $3 billion, the Cook Government is committed to renewable energy generation, transmission and storage, in line with its energy transition commitment to deliver clean, reliable and affordable energy for WA's future.
This investment includes support for Synergy to expand its battery asset portfolio to 3000MWh of storage capacity by the end of 2025.
The installation of the Kwinana batteries coincides with Synergy's upcoming efforts at Collie, which began earlier this year, to develop one of Australia's largest lithium-based batteries. When completed, this battery will provide 500MW of power with 2000MWh of energy storage.
Large-scale battery storage contributes to system stability and supports the continued deployment of renewable generation within the South West Interconnected System.
The newly implemented battery systems at Kwinana Battery Stage Two were supplied by Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), with Power Electronics contracted to supply 72 inverters.
