Students, businesses and the public are stepping out of traditional learning spaces to experience first-hand the pivotal role hydrogen and renewable energy play in shaping the future of the Illawarra. The initiative is part of a project co-funded by the NSW Government and Wollongong City Council, which will see the Clean Energy Tours delivered by Inside Industry.
NSW Regional Government Minister Tara Moriarty said the tours, which will begin at the BlueScope Visitor Centre in September, will provide an insight into the importance of Port Kembla and its contribution to NSW's transition to a low carbon economy. The two-hour tours will cover a range of current and future projects, including:
- Australia's first heavy-duty hydrogen refuelling station, enabling zero-emission trials for trucks and buses, using hydrogen produced at Port Kembla from recycled water and renewable energy.
- Renewable energy from offshore wind farms with the potential to create local jobs in steel fabrication, turbine assembly and maintenance.
- Construction of Australia's first gas import terminal at Port Kembla to supply up to 70 per cent of the state's gas needs and support dual-fuel, hydrogen-capable power stations.
- BlueScope's commitment to sustainable steel production and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
Minister for the Illawarra and South Coast Ryan Park highlighted the tours as an opportunity for residents and visitors to understand the benefits of renewable energy to regional communities. The tours are expected to highlight the potential for hydrogen to create local jobs, diversify the economy and attract investment in the clean energy sector.
Wollongong City Council Chief Executive Greg Doyle highlighted Port Kembla's role as a leader in Australia's clean energy transition. Clean Energy Tours received $40,000 in funding from the NSW Government and Wollongong City Council and is delivered in partnership with Inside Industry.
