Expanding solar access in Carnarvon with Smart Connect Solar

Improved solar access is set to reach regional Western Australia as Horizon Power deploys its Smart Connect Solar technology in Carnarvon.

  • Smart solar technology paves the way for renewable energy expansion in regional Western Australia
  • Smart Solar technology deployment to continue in Onslow in 2019
  • Horizon Power commits to extending Smart Connect Solar to all service areas by 2024

Access to solar energy is being expanded across regional Western Australia with Horizon Power's Smart Connect Solar technology now available in Carnarvon.

This innovative technology utilises a Distributed Energy Resource Management system to facilitate the efficient coordination of solar energy on the grid. This advancement will enable thousands of additional customers in Carnarvon to install rooftop solar while ensuring the safety and stability of the network.

This deployment will alleviate solar installation capacity constraints in Carnarvon and other regional towns, facilitating broader access to rooftop solar across regional WA.

In 2019, Horizon Power made history by becoming the first Australian utility to deploy this technology in a regional microgrid, effectively synchronising customer solar with utility-owned renewables to power the town of Onslow. The system also enabled the town to run on renewable energy alone for approximately 80 minutes.

Horizon Power is committed to extending Smart Connect Solar to all of its service areas, which include the Pilbara, Kimberley, Gascoyne, Mid West and Goldfields regions, by the end of 2024.
