A landmark initiative in Queensland's quest for clean energy is being announced with plans for more than 400 locally manufactured zero emission buses. The aim is to revolutionise public transport while creating new job opportunities.
This milestone, led by the Queensland Government, marks a shift towards reducing emissions by replacing ageing diesel buses across the Translink network with environmentally friendly alternatives. The buses, which are expected to be locally manufactured through a competitive procurement process, are expected to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 80% across Translink's urban network in South East Queensland.
The initiative also includes the establishment of new zero emission depots and the retrofitting of existing depots, reflecting a holistic approach to sustainable transport infrastructure.
Supported by local content requirements, this effort will strengthen Queensland's bus manufacturing sector, creating direct and indirect employment opportunities and stimulating growth within the broader supply chain.
Through a partnership between the Queensland Government Investment Corporation (QIC) and TMR, efforts are being made to maximise value for money while ensuring seamless bus services for Queenslanders. Safety remains a top priority, with measures such as driver protection barriers being incorporated.
Energy Minister Mick de Brenni highlighted the key role of decarbonising the transport sector in attracting clean investment and creating long-term manufacturing jobs, in line with Queensland's clean energy targets.
Manufacturing Minister Glenn Butcher hailed the initiative as a significant boost to Queensland's manufacturing sector, extending the benefits to downstream industries and reinforcing Queensland's reputation as a hub for innovation and manufacturing excellence.
With a focus on local manufacturing, the announcement underlines confidence in Queensland's manufacturing capabilities and reflects the Government's commitment to growing local industry and creating sustainable employment opportunities.
