In a major step towards economic growth in North Queensland, progress on CopperString and the broader Queensland SuperGrid is accelerating as Powerlink announces the recruitment of Townsville-based apprentices for the first time.
An additional 22 people will be based in Townsville to support CopperString at the interim SuperGrid training centre and transmission hub at Bohle. The site for the permanent 10 hectare hub has been unveiled at Cleveland Bay Industrial Park.
The developments coincide with 35 new apprentices and graduates from across Queensland starting their careers with Powerlink. CopperString, a major infrastructure project, links the largest renewable energy zone on Australia's east coast with half a billion dollars worth of critical minerals.
Minister de Brenni will be touring the proposed CopperString route in the coming days to understand the significant benefits it will bring to the North and North West regions, creating and sustaining jobs.
Numerous local businesses are already reaping the benefits of CopperString and a further 450 companies, including 250 from regional Queensland, have expressed interest in participating in the project.
With 50 packages of work released for expressions of interest, covering a range of activities and services, local suppliers wishing to participate in this landmark project have until 31 January to register their interest.
