Construction has begun on Synergy's Collie Battery Energy Storage System, which will be one of Australia's largest grid-scale batteries when completed, strengthening the stability of Western Australia's primary electricity network.
The 500 megawatt / 2000 megawatt hour battery is being funded as part of the State Government's commitment to expand battery storage infrastructure across WA.
Synergy's batteries are already playing a key role in meeting peak demand, with Kwinana Battery Stage One supplying electricity to the South West Interconnected System since its completion in May 2023.
Kwinana Battery Stage Two is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
Collie-based earthworks and remediation experts, Cardinal Contractors, have been awarded the site preparation earthworks contract for the battery facility, which is expected to create up to 500 jobs at peak construction.
The battery is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
Large-scale batteries provide extended system stability and support the deployment of renewable energy, with Synergy aiming to develop 3 gigawatt-hours of storage by 2025.
