Boosting local manufacturing for a sustainable energy future

Western Australia's energy manufacturing sector is set to receive a significant boost with a $26.4 million investment in locally manufactured clean energy components to support local employment opportunities.

  • Significant cash injection to boost local manufacturing for clean energy initiatives
  • Allocation of $18.4 million to deploy an additional 50 locally manufactured stand-alone power systems across regional WA
  • $8 million committed to developing a local wind turbine manufacturing industry
  • The Cook Government's transition to sustainable energy generation, driving local manufacturing job creation

The Cook Labor Government has committed $26.4 million to invest in locally manufactured clean energy components to support job growth in Western Australia's energy manufacturing sector.

As part of the 2024-25 State Budget, the Cook Government will provide $18.4 million for the deployment of a further 50 locally manufactured Standalone Power Systems (SPS) across regional WA.

SPS provide an off-grid power solution that delivers low-cost, reliable energy to off-grid customers through a mix of solar panels, battery storage and back-up generation.

Since 2021, the WA Labor Government, in partnership with Horizon Power, has successfully deployed 56 locally-built SPS units across regional WA. This initiative has not only facilitated the delivery of cleaner and more affordable energy, but has also provided a steady stream of work for local manufacturing businesses.

In addition, the use of SPS has facilitated the removal of approximately 184 kilometres of overhead power lines in regional areas.

The new investment will enable Horizon Power to install a further 50 units in Esperance and across the Mid West region, all of which will be manufactured locally in Western Australia.

In addition to the SPS allocation, the Cook Government will also provide $8 million to support local businesses in the manufacture of wind turbine components.

Given the expected growth in demand for renewable energy and WA's abundant wind resources, promoting opportunities for local businesses in the wind energy supply chain will not only create jobs but also strengthen the economy.

The funding will be provided in the form of grants to facilitate the development of wind turbine manufacturing capacity across the state.
