Wind Farm Receives Approval to Power 700,000 Homes

A wind farm project, set to generate clean energy for up to 700,000 households annually, has been granted authorization by the NSW Government. The Yanco Delta wind farm, situated within the South West Renewable Energy Zone (REZ), has been given the green light.

Virya Energy will spearhead the development of the 1500MW wind farm, located approximately 10km northwest of Jerilderie. Spanning across a vast 33,000-hectare site within the Murrumbidgee and Edward River Local Government Areas, the project will entail the installation of 208 wind turbines, each with a maximum tip height of 270m. Additionally, an 800MW battery energy storage facility and necessary grid connection infrastructure will be constructed.

During the public exhibition of the project’s environmental impact statement, there was overall support, with the Department of Planning and Environment maintaining close engagement with local councils, residents, and government agencies.

With an estimated annual saving of between 2.8 million and 5 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, the project is poised to significantly contribute to the state’s net-zero targets and Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap.

The project's potential impacts will be meticulously managed through stringent conditions, including road upgrades and maintenance, the implementation of management plans, and various mitigation and adaptive measures.
