WA Looks to the Future with New Science and Technology Plan

Western Australia has launched a 10 Year Science and Technology Plan to drive innovation, attract investment, and strengthen the State’s position as a global leader in research and development.

The plan sets a long-term vision for how science and technology can shape the State’s future. It aims to create new jobs, improve quality of life, and grow a strong, knowledge-based economy. It also seeks to support industries that are responding to global challenges such as clean energy, healthcare, food security, and biodiversity.

The plan focuses on increasing investment in research, building partnerships between industry and academia, and developing a diverse and skilled workforce. It highlights the importance of new infrastructure and community engagement to support growth in science and technology.

Six strategic areas guide the plan, supported by the Research and Capability Priorities document and an Action Plan. These will help ensure that investment and research align with the State’s strengths and deliver measurable results.

More than 1,000 representatives from government, business, research, and community sectors contributed to the plan’s development. It reflects Western Australia’s collaborative approach to solving complex problems and building future industries.

Implementation of the plan will be led by the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation, with guidance from a newly formed Science and Technology Council. Expressions of interest for council membership are now open.

The initiative supports Western Australia’s long-term economic diversification and sustainability goals. It complements existing strategies across climate, health, innovation, and education.

Western Australia is recognised globally for its expertise in areas such as remote operations, renewable energy, and digital technology. The new plan aims to build on these strengths and position the State at the forefront of scientific and technological advancement.
