Victoria Prepares Workers for an AI Future

New investment aims to prepare Victoria for a future shaped by artificial intelligence. The focus is on jobs, skills, and long-term growth. Workers remain central to the plan.

A new statewide approach sets out how AI can deliver broad benefits. The plan focuses on job creation and job security. Workers are supported through training and new career paths.

An initial $5.5 million investment supports growth in data centres. A Sustainable Data Centre Action Plan guides this work. The plan uses local strengths such as land, energy, and skilled workers. Projects in development could attract up to $25 billion in future investment.

Planning will use data on transport, energy, and water use. Recycled water forms part of this assessment. These steps help identify suitable locations for data centres with lower environmental impact.

Training forms a key part of the plan. TAFE providers will help build a skilled workforce. Jobs will cover construction, operations, and digital roles. The aim is to keep these jobs local.

Existing workers will also benefit. An $8.1 million program supports upskilling for tech professionals. The goal is to help them move into AI specialist roles.

Training will focus on areas with the greatest impact. Workers can gain AI skills within their current fields. This approach supports smooth career transitions.

Victoria already hosts the largest group of AI firms in the country. The state has 40 operational data centres. A new digital campus at Fishermans Bend will expand this presence. The project is expected to create thousands of jobs across technology and research sectors.

AI growth could add up to $30 billion to the state economy over the next decade. A guiding AI Mission Statement will shape future actions. More detail will follow.
