New Battery Projects Aim to Boost Clean Energy Supply in Victoria

Two new energy storage projects have received approval in Victoria. The projects aim to increase the supply of renewable power. The projects also aim to help lower electricity costs for households.

One project involves a 300-megawatt battery energy storage system in Heywood. Another project involves a 400-megawatt battery system in Glenrowan. Both projects moved forward through the Development Facilitation Program. The program helps speed up decisions on major energy developments.

The program has supported many renewable projects in the state. More than $9 billion in investment has been approved across 25 projects. These projects are expected to create more than 3,300 jobs during construction and operation.

Once completed, the approved projects will produce enough electricity for more than 735,000 homes each year. The battery systems will store energy for later use. They will help supply power during the evening when demand is high. The stored energy could support peak demand for up to two million households.

The Heywood battery project sits close to the Heywood Terminal Station. The facility will have the capacity to supply peak evening power for about 103,000 homes. Construction could create up to 150 jobs. Some ongoing roles will remain once the site begins operation.

The Glenrowan battery project will connect to the nearby Glenrowan Terminal Station. The system could supply power for around 138,000 homes during periods of high demand. About 100 construction jobs may be created during the building phase.

Battery systems store renewable energy produced during the day. Solar and wind energy can charge the batteries when supply is high. The stored power can then return to the grid during busy hours. This process helps stabilise the electricity system. It also helps manage price pressure.

Both projects required consultation with local communities. Discussions also involved several agencies and organisations. Local councils took part. Emergency services reviewed safety plans. Energy network operators examined grid connections.

Energy storage projects continue to expand across Victoria. New infrastructure supports the growing share of renewable energy in the electricity system. Industry groups say battery storage plays an important role in keeping power reliable while renewable supply grows.
