Victoria Opens First Dedicated Battery-In-Device Recycling Facility

Victoria now has a new recycling facility focused on batteries found inside household devices. This plant will help divert over 8,000 tonnes of waste from landfill each year.

Located in Campbellfield, the facility operated by EcoCycle is the first in Australia dedicated to shredding batteries embedded in devices. It can recover up to 95 percent of metals, plastics, and valuable materials for further recycling.

The plant processes batteries from everyday products like toys, laptops, mobile phones, and power tools. These items create one of the fastest growing and most hazardous waste streams in the country.

The facility uses a water-based shredding system to safely break down battery-powered devices. It can handle everything from small button batteries to large rechargeable packs found in tools and e-mobility products. It can process up to one tonne of batteries per hour.

While other battery recycling facilities exist in Australia, this plant focuses specifically on embedded batteries inside devices. Many batteries still end up in landfill, causing fire and pollution risks. Victoria banned disposal of batteries and e-waste in landfill in 2019. This facility supports efforts to reduce waste and protect the environment.

The project marks a big step forward for recycling and waste management in the region.
