Victoria invests in quantum technologies to drive discovery and jobs

The Andrews Labor Government is investing $8 million in Quantum Brilliance, an innovative Australian company at the forefront of the emerging quantum technologies sector. The investment is part of the Government's drive to establish Victoria as a global player in this rapidly developing field.

Quantum computing is a technology that makes it possible to solve problems too complex for ordinary computers. It typically requires a fixed setup at sub-zero temperatures, making it a challenge to make the technology portable. However, the technology is well suited to real-world applications such as medical imaging, satellite technology and robotics, putting Victoria at the forefront of this transformative technology.

Victoria is one of the few jurisdictions in the world to invest heavily in quantum computing research. The potential discoveries from this investment could lead to significant job growth in this cutting-edge industry.

Quantum Brilliance, founded in 2019 by scientists from the Australian National University, has developed the world's first portable quantum computer that operates at room temperature. The company uses the crystalline structure of diamonds as an insulator against noise and temperature, enabling more advanced computing.

The investment in Quantum Brilliance will help the company expand its operations in Melbourne and its extensive research partnerships with several Victorian universities. This includes plans for basic and advanced manufacturing in Victoria as the company grows. This is Breakthrough Victoria's second investment in the sector and its first in an Australian company.
