A new plan has been released to upgrade Western Australia’s main power grid and expand opportunities for local businesses and workers.
The South West Interconnected System (SWIS) Transmission Plan sets out the infrastructure needed to support the State’s clean energy transition and future economic growth. It will expand grid capacity, strengthen key industrial areas, and create pathways for new renewable energy generation.
The plan will enable the gradual phase-out of coal generation and support the growth of new industries that focus on clean technology and sustainable manufacturing. It will also help existing industries decarbonise and move towards electrification.
Western Power, Synergy, and Horizon Power will implement measures to support local manufacturing and increase local content in upcoming projects. The focus is on creating more opportunities for Western Australian businesses to participate in energy infrastructure development.
The SWIS Transmission Plan will roll out in three phases. The first phase targets upgrades in Kwinana, the Western Trade Coast, Coolangatta Industrial Estate, and Kemerton, unlocking 1,500 megawatts of power for future industrial growth. The Coolangatta Industrial Estate forms an important part of the Collie Just Transition.
The second phase will expand capacity in Chittering, Moora, Collie, and metropolitan Perth. The third phase will extend the network to support new green industries across the State.
The plan aims to unlock more than two gigawatts of renewable energy generation before 2030. It will create a stronger, more resilient grid that supports clean, affordable energy for homes and businesses.
