The Stanwell Power Station in Central Queensland is poised to undergo a major upgrade with the expansion of its battery energy storage system. The project will see the current battery system doubled in size from 150MW / 300 MWh to a massive 300MW / 1,200 MWh capacity, making it the largest committed battery project in Queensland.
This new battery system, developed in partnership with Tesla and Yurika, will have the capability to supply energy into the grid for up to four hours, helping to ensure a stable and reliable energy supply, even when renewable energy generation from solar and wind is intermittent. The project will significantly contribute to Queensland’s clean energy future, supporting the state’s transition to a renewable energy hub.
The $747 million project will also provide a boost to the local economy, creating up to 80 full-time jobs during the construction phase and six additional jobs for the ongoing operation of the battery system. Located at the Stanwell Power Station near Rockhampton, the expanded battery system is part of a broader transition of the site into a Clean Energy Hub.
Construction is set to begin in May 2024, with the new system expected to be operational by mid-2027. The project represents a significant step in Queensland's efforts to secure a cleaner, more reliable energy future while supporting local jobs and the regional economy.
