Phillip Island now has six neighbourhood batteries helping families save on energy bills and use more solar power. These batteries store renewable energy during the day when it is plentiful. They send power back to homes when it is needed most.
The batteries are located in Cowes and Wimbledon Heights. Together, they provide 900 kW of power and 1,845 kWh of storage. The project is a partnership between local energy groups and the Bass Coast Shire Council.
Neighbourhood batteries also help keep power running during bad weather. They make the energy grid stronger and allow more solar power to be added.
The savings and income from the batteries will support a Community Fund. This fund will help local projects over 15 years.
The program includes 90 batteries across the state. It supports community groups, not-for-profits, and public places with their energy needs.
This effort aims to reach 2.6 GW of energy storage by 2030 and 6.3 GW by 2035. This is enough energy to power about half of the homes in Victoria during peak times.
Applications for more neighbourhood batteries are open until 15 September 2025. More information can be found at energy.vic.gov.au.
