NSW to Launch Digital Birth Certificate for Easier Identity Verification

NSW is introducing a new Digital Birth Certificate to make proving identity easier and safer. The certificate will be available through the Service NSW app.

The first release is planned for March 2026 and will target people aged 16 to 21 who hold a photo card or driver licence. The digital certificate meets international standards and can be accessed on a smartphone.

The Digital Birth Certificate allows users to control what information is shared and with whom. It can be used at Service NSW centres for tasks like applying for Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) and Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG) competency cards.

Service NSW and the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages are working with industry to ensure the digital certificate is widely accepted by government, businesses, schools, clubs, and sporting organisations.

The digital version offers protection during emergencies, such as natural disasters, when paper certificates may be lost or destroyed. Users can verify identity quickly without waiting for a replacement.

Participation in the program is optional for those eligible.
