NSW Hits 100,000 Electric Vehicles on the Road

New South Wales has reached 100,000 electric vehicles on its roads. These EVs are helping cut emissions by nearly 145,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year, saving around 121 million litres of petrol.

Electric vehicles now make up 8.6 per cent of new light vehicle sales in 2025, up from 0.7 per cent in 2020. EVs are used in many forms, including family cars, city cars, vans, buses, and trucks.

Households using EVs save about $1,500 a year compared to petrol. Each EV on the road reduces emissions equal to the output of 32,000 homes or 4,000 Sydney-to-Melbourne flights.

NSW has installed nearly 3,300 new EV chargers at more than 1,200 sites. Chargers are located at service stations, visitor centres, supermarkets, holiday spots, and kerbside areas in cities and regional towns.

The NSW Electric Vehicle Strategy aims to grow EV use, expand charging networks, and reduce transport emissions, which are the state’s second largest source of greenhouse gases.

The growth of EVs in NSW shows strong community interest in cleaner and cheaper transport. Drivers are choosing EVs for lower running costs, convenience, and environmental benefits.
