NSW Health has unveiled its first-ever Net Zero Roadmap, setting out a bold and comprehensive strategy to transform the state’s public health system into a low-carbon, low-waste, and climate-resilient sector by 2050.
The NSW Health Net Zero Roadmap outlines six strategic areas of focus to achieve net zero emissions, while continuing to deliver high-quality, innovative, and equitable healthcare to the community. The initiative aligns with Future Health: guiding the next decade of care in NSW 2022–2032, which places environmental sustainability at the heart of future health services.
The six strategic priorities are:
- Healthcare Delivery – Shifting to modern, low-carbon models of care.
- Land and Buildings – Decarbonising infrastructure and improving the sustainability of health precincts.
- Energy and Water – Enhancing efficiency and reducing emissions through better resource management.
- Supply Chain – Promoting circular economy practices and reducing procurement-related emissions.
- Travel and Transport – Expanding telehealth, increasing active transport, and electrifying the NSW Health vehicle fleet.
- Food Services – Ensuring sustainable sourcing and reducing food waste, while maintaining nutritional quality for patients.
The roadmap reinforces NSW Health’s recognition that public health and environmental health are interconnected, and that reducing healthcare’s environmental footprint is essential for long-term health outcomes.
NSW Health is already rolling out innovative technologies and sustainable practices to support these goals, with a focus on system-wide transformation.
