A new Office for Artificial Intelligence has been created to support the safe and effective use of AI across New South Wales government agencies. The office will operate within Digital NSW under the Department of Customer Service.
Its role is to guide the responsible use of AI to improve the delivery of public services. It will set clear standards, offer expert advice and promote trust in the technology. The office will also help government staff build confidence and understanding in AI use through training and support.
Recent projects such as smart school zone signs in the Hunter region have already shown how AI can improve safety and efficiency. The office will help identify more opportunities like these while managing risks and maintaining high ethical standards.
An updated AI Assessment Framework will be released later this year in collaboration with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. The office will operate for an initial two-year period to adapt to the rapid growth of AI technology.
The AI Review Committee will continue to assess high-risk government AI projects. It now includes several new members with expertise in technology, law, privacy and ethics. The committee’s work will ensure all AI systems used by the government remain safe, transparent and accountable.
This initiative marks a major step in the state’s digital transformation, aiming to use technology that enhances public services while protecting the community’s trust.
