New Innovation Fund to Protect the Great Barrier Reef

A $24 million Great Barrier Reef Urban Technology and Innovation Fund has been launched to develop new solutions for reducing urban water pollution. The program aims to protect one of the world’s most diverse marine ecosystems and support the communities that depend on it.

The Fund will focus on improving the management of stormwater, wastewater, and industrial runoff in areas surrounding the Reef. Urban regions make up less than one per cent of the Reef catchment but can have significant local impacts on water quality.

Funding will support the design and testing of new technologies and management approaches. It will also help expand the use of existing solutions that have proven effective in other regions.

The initiative will receive equal contributions of $12 million from both the Australian and Queensland Governments, with further investment expected from participating organisations. The Queensland Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation will oversee the program.

The Great Barrier Reef supports thousands of marine species and holds strong cultural and economic value. It attracts millions of visitors each year and helps protect the Queensland coastline. Efforts like this fund aim to ensure its continued health and sustainability for future generations.
