Queensland’s energy reliability will receive a major boost through a $48 million investment to overhaul the Wivenhoe Pumped Hydro Power Station. The project will improve efficiency and extend the lifespan of one of the state’s key energy assets.
Each of the two 285-megawatt turbines at Wivenhoe will undergo a full overhaul across the next two years. The works will ensure the station continues to deliver stable and efficient energy to support households, businesses, and industry.
Wivenhoe recently achieved record performance, generating more than 218 gigawatt hours in the final quarter of the last financial year. This marked the highest output in the power station’s 40-year history.
CleanCo, the operator of Wivenhoe, will begin the maintenance program in May 2026. The upgrades will strengthen the reliability of Queensland’s only operational pumped hydro facility, which plays a crucial role in balancing the state’s electricity network.
CleanCo is also studying the potential for a new pumped hydro project at Mount Rawdon. The project would convert a former gold mine into a renewable energy asset, further supporting Queensland’s energy future.
The Wivenhoe overhaul is part of a broader plan to ensure a dependable and affordable energy supply for Queensland.
