A bright green pedestrian and cycling bridge in Docklands is now open, offering faster and safer travel between the city and the inner west. The elevated crossing over Footscray Road creates a dedicated pathway for walkers and bike riders, improving connections across a busy intersection.
Inspired by the iconic West Gate Bridge, the 220-metre-long bridge is suspended from two 40-metre tall steel pylons with cables, allowing cyclists to cross diagonally over Footscray Road. It links the Docklands retail precinct, Capital City Trail, Moonee Ponds Creek Trail, and the soon-to-be-completed elevated Veloway.
This new infrastructure provides a safe, dedicated crossing over Footscray Road and Waterfront Way, connecting key cycling routes and enhancing one of Melbourne’s important strategic bike corridors.
Local children and families can now enjoy safer walking, scooting, and cycling access to Docklands Primary School thanks to the bridge.
The bridge forms a vital part of the development of Australia’s premier cycling super-highway, including a 2.5-kilometre Veloway set to open later this year.
More than 14 kilometres of new and upgraded paths are being delivered to make cycling safer and more accessible throughout the area.
