NBN Co has announced plans to significantly improve its broadband offering across Australia. The proposal includes increasing download speeds on the popular nbn Home Fast product from 100/20 Mbps to 500/50 Mbps, at no additional wholesale cost to retailers.
NBN Co intends to roll out the accelerated speeds primarily to customers connected via Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) technologies. The company also intends to triple the download speed of its nbn Home Superfast product and increase the speeds of its highest residential speed tier, nbn Home Ultrafast, at no additional cost.
This initiative is in response to the increasing adoption and use of technology both in Australia and globally. By leveraging the growing capabilities of fibre, NBN Co aims to ensure more Australians have access to reliable, high-speed internet.
Under the proposal, customers currently subscribing to or planning to upgrade to one of the three fastest products will benefit from the accelerated speeds. NBN Co also plans to relax eligibility criteria for customers in certain areas to make it easier to upgrade to full fibre.
To check eligibility and access faster speeds, customers can visit the NBN website. The company has seen a surge in demand for full fibre upgrades, with thousands of homes and businesses opting for Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) each week.
The move to increase internet speeds underlines NBN Co's commitment to meeting the evolving needs of consumers in an increasingly digital age. With data usage doubling in the past five years and the average household now consuming 443 gigabytes per month across 22 internet-connected devices, faster and more reliable broadband is paramount.
NBN Co expects to introduce the accelerated speeds within the next 12 months and has issued a consultation paper to internet retailers for feedback on the proposed changes. Working with industry, NBN Co aims to deliver these enhanced services to customers later this year or early next year, ensuring a seamless online experience for all.
