Melbourne Chosen as Global Hub for AI-Powered Healthcare

A world leader in artificial intelligence medical technology is expanding in Victoria, strengthening the state’s role in global health innovation.

Optain Health will open its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Melbourne and expand its global Research and Development and Engineering Hub. The new base will create 49 jobs and add $10 million in research investment.

Optain develops AI and robotic imaging tools that detect eye and systemic diseases early. The company’s technology uses a portable robotic camera and advanced AI systems to identify conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and cardiovascular disease risk. It provides results from a simple, non-invasive eye test.

The company’s roots are in Victoria, where the original technology was created before being launched internationally. Its expansion builds on partnerships with universities, researchers and local industries to develop new AI applications and improve healthcare outcomes.

The new hub will focus on using the science of oculomics, which studies how eye data can reveal insights about overall body health. The goal is to deliver faster, more accurate and more accessible healthcare through innovation.

Melbourne has become a national centre for artificial intelligence, home to more than 180 AI companies. Around one in five Australian AI businesses are based in Victoria, creating a strong network for collaboration and growth.

The expansion highlights Victoria’s growing strength in health and digital technologies, helping drive jobs, investment and medical breakthroughs that can reach patients around the world.
