Community-led placemaking initiatives, ground-breaking transparency in infrastructure policy and the revitalisation of under-utilised public spaces into vibrant hubs of activity are being recognised today at the inaugural Place Innovation Awards.
Launched by Local Government Minister David Michael, the awards celebrate innovative and collaborative approaches to placemaking in Western Australia.
Presented at the WA Local Government Association's (WALGA) annual Local Futures Convention, the awards recognise excellence in three categories:
- Outstanding Achievement: City of Kwinana - Wellard Village 7 Day Makeover
- Metropolitan Perth and Peel: City of Mandurah - Community Initiated Infrastructure Policy
- Regional Western Australia: Shire of Pingelly - Pingelly Pocket/Gnalla Wangkiny Park
Nominations for the awards were judged on their innovative approach to place-based opportunities or challenges, significant improvements to standard practice and high levels of collaboration with external stakeholders and within local government.
Run by Town Team Movement (TTM) with support from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC), the awards aim to connect, organise and act to rejuvenate neighbourhoods and create better places.
Placemaking involves planners, community members, architects, local government and businesses working together to activate local spaces.
DLGSC has funded TTM to provide free placemaking training to all elected members and local government staff in WA.
