Victoria is advancing its clean energy future with the launch of Australia’s first purpose-built hydrogen research, testing, and training facility at Deakin University in Warrnambool. The Hycel Hydrogen Technology Hub, located on a 4.5-hectare site alongside South West TAFE, will play a pivotal role in developing and testing hydrogen technologies, particularly fuel cells for heavy transport, trains, and boats.
The facility features a product engineering development lab, three laboratory bays, and community spaces, significantly boosting the state's capabilities in hydrogen manufacturing. The Hycel Hub is expected to create up to 200 jobs in regional Victoria, including 50 construction roles and 16 positions in the energy sector.
The $18 million project, co-funded by the state and federal governments, will not only drive research in hydrogen fuels but also provide workforce training to support the emerging renewable hydrogen sector. The Hub’s work is essential in Victoria’s pursuit of net-zero emissions by 2045 and the decarbonization of high-emission industries such as long-haul transport, aviation, and heavy manufacturing.
