Half a Million New Green Bins to Tackle Queensland’s Organic Waste

Almost 500,000 new green-lid bins will soon roll out across Queensland to help reduce the amount of organic waste sent to landfill each year. The initiative is expected to divert about 100,000 tonnes of food and garden waste annually.

More than $41 million has been allocated to seven councils in South East Queensland, Central Queensland, and Far North Queensland. The funding supports the expansion of kerbside green waste collection services as part of the $151 million GROW FOGO Fund, which focuses on the recovery of food and garden organics.

The new bins will allow households to separate organic materials like grass clippings, leaves, and food scraps from regular waste. This will help lower methane emissions and reduce the pressure on landfill sites.

Councils that expand their green waste services can also save on landfill levies and make better use of available land for housing and community growth.

Local governments are now preparing for collection service upgrades and new bin deliveries. The program marks a major step toward improving Queensland’s recycling performance and building a more sustainable waste system.
