GreenTech Hub Launches First Energy Storage Challenge

Western Australia’s new GreenTech Hub has begun its first major innovation challenge, focusing on the development of advanced energy storage technologies.

The hub aims to accelerate progress toward a low-carbon future by creating solutions that reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Its work will help lower greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen the State’s clean energy capabilities.

Energy storage will be the first challenge area for the hub. Researchers and industry experts will collaborate to identify scalable and long-duration storage systems that can deliver reliable energy to both urban and remote areas.

The GreenTech Hub is funded through the $40 million Lower Carbon Grants Program, a joint initiative supported by the State and the Chevron-operated Gorgon Project. The hub itself is a $4 million investment over four years.

Curtin University operates the facility as a stand-alone innovation centre. It brings together academic and industry partners through accelerator programs and technical challenges to drive green technology development.

Each innovation challenge will form a consortium of experts to research, test and deploy practical solutions. The goal is to strengthen local innovation and create new opportunities in the clean energy sector.

The GreenTech Hub joins a network of State-funded innovation centres that focus on areas such as data science, cybersecurity, creative technologies and life sciences.
