Expansion of successful EV rebate initiative

As part of the 2024-25 State Budget, the Cook Labor Government is providing an additional $5.2 million for the Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) rebate, anticipating increased demand as Western Australians increasingly adopt electric vehicles (EVs).

  • $5.2 million injection to meet growing demand for Zero Emissions Vehicle rebate
  • More than 5,900 rebate applications processed to date, totalling more than $20 million
  • Part of the Cook Government's Clean Energy Car Fund to promote zero emission vehicles in WA

The Cook Labor Government is boosting the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) rebate initiative with an additional $5.2 million in the 2024-25 State Budget, anticipating a surge in demand as more Western Australians choose electric vehicles (EVs).

Since the introduction of the ZEV rebate in 2022, there has been a significant increase in the uptake of EVs in Western Australia, with sales almost quadrupling since June 2022.

As of 31 March 2024, more than 5,900 ZEV rebate applications have been successfully processed for WA EV owners, totalling an impressive $20.7 million in rebates.

Under the ZEV scheme, eligible individuals will receive a $3,500 rebate on the purchase of a qualifying vehicle and submission of an application to the Department of Transport. Applications are open until midnight on Saturday 10 May 2025.

To qualify for the rebate, the vehicle must meet the following criteria:

  • be a zero-emission vehicle and be fully powered by batteries or hydrogen fuel cells;
  • be a light vehicle (vehicle with a gross vehicle mass of 4.5 tonne or less), including:
    • light passenger vehicles, such as sedans, hatchbacks and sports utility vehicles (SUVs);
    • light commercial vehicles; and
    • light trucks.
  • be granted a vehicle licence in WA on or after Tuesday 10 May 2022;
  • have a maximum dutiable value of $70,000 or less; and
  • be brand new and never previously been registered or licensed in Australia or overseas.

The Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) Rebate Scheme provides a financial incentive to encourage the uptake of zero emission vehicles, in line with the objectives of the Government's Clean Energy Car Fund.
