Expanding Access to Electric Vehicle Training in NSW to Strengthen Workforce

New South Wales is stepping up efforts to support the automotive workforce, especially in regional areas, by expanding access to electric vehicle (EV) training. With more than one million zero and low-emission vehicles expected to be on Australian roads by 2030, the need for skilled automotive service technicians is rising rapidly.

To meet this demand, TAFE NSW Tamworth is utilizing virtual classroom delivery to complement in-person training. This approach allows students to attend sessions remotely while observing live practical demonstrations from the TAFE automotive workshop. The use of advanced technology enables students to gain hands-on experience with minimal disruption to their work schedules, as in-person training is reduced to just one day.

Participants in the program receive a Statement of Attainment in Depower and Reinitialise Hybrid and Battery Electric Vehicles, equipping them with the skills needed to safely service and repair electric and hybrid vehicles.

The training initiative aims to address the skills shortage in the state and help future-proof the workforce in the renewable energy and electric vehicle sectors. By providing flexible learning options, such as remote-access courses, TAFE NSW is ensuring that regional mechanics have the tools they need to adapt to the evolving demands of the automotive industry.
