Energy worker training programme prepares for future opportunities

North Metropolitan TAFE is working with Horizon Power to train workers in the operation and maintenance of Standalone Power Systems (SPS), in line with the transition to a cleaner energy future.

  • Collaboration between North Metro TAFE and Horizon Power to support Western Australia's clean energy transition
  • Introduction of new training opportunities and equipment for energy workers
  • Provide basic, intermediate and advanced Standalone Power System (SPS) training programs
  • Empowering employees to improve workforce skills in cutting-edge technologies

North Metropolitan TAFE (NM TAFE) is partnering with Horizon Power to provide training for workers involved in the operation and maintenance of Standalone Power Systems (SPS), reflecting the Cook Government's commitment to move towards cleaner energy solutions.

As part of this collaboration, Horizon Power has generously donated a 3kW SPS unit, similar to those used throughout Western Australia, to TAFE's East Perth campus.

This partnership will enable staff to receive comprehensive training on SPS infrastructure, ensuring they have the necessary expertise to effectively install and manage these systems in their respective regions.

Horizon Power has been at the forefront of implementing stand-alone power solutions in WA, particularly for agricultural purposes, following the 2015 Esperance bushfires.

SPS units typically consist of solar panels, battery storage and backup diesel generation, providing customers with safer, greener and more reliable power alternatives.

The donated SPS unit consists of four solar panels, each capable of producing 370W of peak power, and three lithium-ion batteries, each with a nominal storage capacity of 2.84KWh.

This donation complements the State Government's ongoing $25 million investment in upgrading equipment at WA TAFE colleges as part of a broader four-year initiative to modernise TAFE facilities.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding, Horizon Power and NM TAFE are jointly developing training packages for a range of emerging technologies including SPS units, hydrogen, community battery storage and battery energy storage systems.
