The Electricity Industry Amendment (Distributed Energy Resources) Bill 2023 has been introduced to Parliament, providing a flexible and forward-looking regulatory framework.

The amendments aim to support the integration of new technologies, such as rooftop solar and battery storage, in line with the goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

As Western Australia's energy landscape undergoes unprecedented change, outdated legislation governing the electricity sector needs to be modernised.

The introduction of a State Electricity Objective will guide decision-making and ensure that environmental considerations, emissions, pricing and reliability are prioritised to serve the long-term interests of energy consumers.

The Bill consolidates rules and codes into the Electricity System and Market Rules, simplifying regulations and facilitating the integration of new technologies into the electricity system.

Developed in consultation with industry and consumer representatives, the legislation aims to ensure the provision of clean, reliable and affordable electricity for all Western Australians.
