Draft Guideline Released on Community Benefits from Renewable Energy Projects

A new Draft Guideline on Community Benefits for Renewable Energy Projects has been released for public consultation. The guideline aims to ensure that all Western Australians share in the advantages of the energy transition.

The guideline applies to solar, wind, and battery projects across the state. It responds to calls from local governments, industry, and communities for clear guidance on how renewable energy developments can benefit the areas where they are built.

Regional communities with strong renewable resources will play an important role in the state’s energy future. Renewable projects can deliver clean energy, create jobs, and open supply chain opportunities.

Renewable energy developers want to invest in community benefits but need clear and consistent rules. The guideline offers a starting point for fair agreements that balance local community benefits with affordable energy. It recognises that impacts and benefits may not always match in local areas near projects such as wind farms, solar arrays, and battery sites.

The draft aims to simplify community consultation for both developers and residents. It mostly focuses on projects that connect to the South West Interconnected System but can be used across Western Australia.

The public can view the draft guideline on the Energy Policy WA website. Consultation on the guideline closes on 4 August 2025.

The guideline follows discussions at a renewable energy forum hosted by the WA Local Government Association. It reflects the needs of local governments and industry for clear guidance on community benefits.
