Digital Health in Aged Care: New Insights on Data Sharing

A new report highlights how data is collected, shared, and used across Australia’s aged care sector. CSIRO’s Australian e-Health Research Centre (AEHRC) and the Digital Health Cooperative Research Centre (DHCRC) produced the report. It identifies challenges and opportunities in digital health for older Australians.

The report shows that standardised data sharing is important for connected and coordinated care. Data is collected in many ways and formats to support older adults at home and in residential facilities.

Interviews with care recipients and providers revealed that sharing the same information across services is difficult. Older Australians often need to repeat their care details because systems do not exchange data effectively. GPs and allied health professionals also face challenges accessing up-to-date information.

Improving system interoperability can reduce duplication, save time, and improve the quality of care. The report highlights the need for a common data language and a coordinated national approach. Lessons from the healthcare sector, where similar issues are being addressed, can guide aged care improvements.

The report supports the Federal Government’s Aged Care Data and Digital Strategy. It also notes progress through projects such as the Aged Care FHIR Implementation Guide and Benchmarking MVP. These initiatives aim to create more integrated and effective digital health systems.
