CSIRO has opened applications for its latest Innovate to Grow program. The program helps small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) turn early ideas into research-driven solutions for Australia’s farm and food sector.
The eight-week online program is free. It guides participants to create clear research and development plans, build innovation skills, and connect with expert support. SMEs gain tools and networks to reduce risk and take advantage of new opportunities.
Dr Ingrid Appelqvist, Senior Principal Food Material Scientist at CSIRO, said the program arrives as digital, biological, and advanced manufacturing technologies reshape the food system. “SMEs play a key role in this transformation. Innovate to Grow gives them the confidence and expertise to turn ideas into practical R&D pathways,” she said.
Since 2020, the program has helped over 750 SMEs. Participants access expert facilitators, self-paced learning, and networking to turn emerging ideas into actionable projects.
One past participant, Esther Rupenovic, founder of Tasmanian business Jack and Chelo, said the program helped her scale her business. Her company produces chef-prepared, nutritionally balanced meals for dogs delivered via subscription. “This program opened my eyes to research teams available for small businesses — I never knew they existed,” she said.
Innovate to Grow supports SMEs working in:
- Agritech and AI
- Food and beverage manufacturing, packaging, and transport
- Livestock and aquaculture
- Value-add products
- Waste optimisation and recycling
- Energy reduction and circular economy
- Other emerging farm and food technologies
Applications are open until 15 February 2026.
