The National AI Centre, co-ordinated by CSIRO, Australia's national science agency, has announced the launch of the Responsible AI Network, a program designed to support the development and adoption of responsible AI solutions by Australian businesses. With the global economy expected to be worth $22.17 trillion by 2030, AI is a valuable tool, but poorly developed solutions can have serious consequences, from data breaches to ethical concerns.
The Responsible AI Network is centred around six core pillars: Law, Standards, Principles, Governance, Leadership, and Technology. The program brings together a national community of practice, guided by world-leading expert partners, to provide practical guidance and coaching to industry leaders on ethical and responsible AI practices.
The Knowledge Partners of the Responsible AI Network include the Australian Industry Group, Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA), CEDA, CSIRO's Data61, Standards Australia, The Ethics Centre, The Gradient Institute, The Human Technology Institute at UTS, and the Tech Council of Australia.
According to Stela Solar, Director of the National AI Centre, the Responsible AI Network will help Australian businesses to take advantage of the trillion-dollar opportunity presented by AI technologies. She emphasized that responsible AI practices are crucial for organizations, given the evolving regulatory landscape and the need to address data quality, privacy, and security concerns.
Ms. Solar added that the Responsible AI Network provides a unique offering, with practical guidance and coaching from experts on the six core pillars. By building explainability, fairness, and accountability into Australian AI systems, the program aims to equip businesses with the toolkit to build and deploy safe and ethical AI solutions.
With the Responsible AI Network, Australia takes a big step forward in collaborating across the ecosystem to share best practice and respond to the rapidly evolving AI landscape. As first movers on AI ethics principles and with a world-leading research capability in responsible AI, Australia has a natural advantage.
