Achieving net zero emissions through sustainable procurement

Release date: 10/07/23

A new sustainable procurement policy has been rolled out across the State Government's infrastructure and transport programs as part of its ongoing efforts to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Prioritising the procurement of climate-friendly goods and services is not only essential to reducing the Government's carbon footprint, but also plays a key role in driving the transition to a low carbon economy.

By using its procurement influence to support suppliers of low-carbon products, the South Australian Government aims to create viable markets for these products and support the growth of climate-smart businesses in the state.

This policy, implemented by the Department of Infrastructure and Transport, ensures that sustainability risks and opportunities are assessed throughout the procurement process. Measures include:

  • Request low-emission or carbon-neutral goods and services.
  • Evaluating suppliers' commitment to low emission outcomes during tender evaluations.
  • Mandating participation in the government's EV Fleet Pledge programme for suppliers with vehicle fleets.
  • Include emissions reduction targets and KPIs in long-term contracts.

In addition, from mid-2024, contractors bidding on projects worth more than $50 million will be required to set organisational emissions reduction targets covering their fuel and electricity use and supply chain emissions.

In line with existing sustainability mandates, the DIT Sustainable Procurement Policy ensures that the Department's procurement practices are aligned with the Government's vision for a green economy.

Ongoing engagement with suppliers and industry bodies aims to remove barriers and stimulate demand for low carbon building materials.
