$60 Million in Community Benefits Flowing to Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone

Communities across the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) are set to receive $60 million in grants to fund 54 local projects that will deliver infrastructure upgrades, housing, community services, and lasting benefits ahead of major renewable energy construction.

The funding supports upgrades to worker housing, critical water infrastructure, training programs, preschools, health services, sports and cultural events, tourism, and community facilities such as halls and sports grounds. Key towns benefiting include Dubbo, Dunedoo, Gilgandra, Gulgong, Mudgee, and Wellington.

Significant grants include:

  • Affordable housing and civil works in Mudgee

  • Water infrastructure upgrades in Warrumbungle and Upper Hunter Shires

  • A Renewable Energy Awareness and Career Training (REACT) Centre in Dubbo to support local renewable energy job opportunities

Community projects funded cover a wide range of improvements such as outfitting classrooms with therapy rooms, upgrading community halls, adding shade sails to swimming pools, enhancing sports facilities with floodlighting, and promoting mental health awareness in rural communities.

This is the first round of funding from the $128 million Community and Employment Benefit Program supporting the rollout of the Central-West Orana REZ. Additional projects will be announced as community interest continues to grow. Future funding will come from access fees paid by renewable energy project owners connected to the REZ.

The Central-West Orana REZ is the state’s first Renewable Energy Zone, expected to attract up to $20 billion in private investment by 2030 and support around 5,000 construction jobs. The 240-kilometre transmission line will impact a minimal portion of agricultural land while helping transition to reliable, affordable, and clean energy.
