Victoria is set to modernise its firefighting fleet with the introduction of the state's first electric fire engine. The innovative vehicle, called EVIE (Electric Vehicle for Incident and Emergency), is on its way from Austria and will soon join Fire Rescue Victoria's (FRV) fleet.
EVIE, a pioneering addition to FRV's fleet and only the second all-electric fire engine in Australia, has been designed to FRV's specifications. It incorporates the latest firefighting equipment and technology in a zero-emission vehicle.
The truck has advanced capabilities, including independent drive and pump systems that allow firefighters to operate the vehicle and its equipment simultaneously without having to park and set up. Enhanced interior features provide additional storage and improved comfort for the crew.
EVIE also features artwork by Samantha Richards, a descendant of the Wurundjeri and Dja Dja Wurrung peoples, entitled 'Bunjil and Waa'.
Upon delivery, firefighters will receive extensive training on EVIE's technology before it is phased into service in early 2025. Initially, it will shadow other fire engines to fully test its performance.
In addition to EVIE, recent investments include $13.7 million for five new aerial platforms equipped with the latest technology, and 22 new trucks and support vehicles, such as heavy pumpers and heavy rescue vehicles, which are currently in the design phase.
