Tasmania Expands Free WiFi Access Across the State

Tasmania has expanded its Statewide WiFi Access Program (SWAP), now offering free public WiFi at over 80 government locations throughout the state. The network is available at key sites, including hospitals, community health centres, libraries, and government buildings.

Launched in December 2023, SWAP was designed to increase digital access for Tasmanians, especially those who may not have reliable internet connections at home. The expansion of this free WiFi network provides an important resource for individuals to access essential services, apply for jobs, participate in educational activities, and stay connected with family and friends.

This initiative is especially important in areas where broadband coverage is limited or unavailable, offering residents the ability to access online services at public facilities. Additionally, the free WiFi network is seen as a crucial tool during emergencies, as it can provide vital connectivity during events such as extreme weather conditions.

The SWAP program is powered by Telstra and supported by Cisco technology, part of the Tasmanian Government’s broader efforts to bridge the digital divide and enhance community access to digital services. The updated map of all available WiFi access points is available online, providing easy access to users across the state.
