Progress towards nationwide implementation of digital driving licences

In a move towards modernisation, millions of Victorians will soon be able to carry their driver's licence on their smartphone as the state prepares for the rollout of digital driver licences.

Preparations for the launch were announced during a visit to Hertz car rental by the relevant authorities, who highlighted the readiness of a range of organisations including bars, restaurants, retailers, law enforcement and Australia Post to accept this new form of identification.

From next month, more than 4.5 million fully licensed drivers, motorcyclists and heavy vehicle operators will be able to download their digital licences as part of the national roll-out, following a successful trial in Ballarat last year.

The digital licences have undergone a thorough privacy and security assessment and include advanced features such as dynamic holograms and timed QR codes, enabling businesses and government to verify authenticity and effectively prevent fraud.

They can also be updated in real time to reflect any changes to licence conditions or personal details such as addresses.

Following processing in May, Victorians who have installed the VicRoads or Services Victoria app will automatically receive their digital licences, with notifications sent via push notification or email.

While learners and probationary licence holders will have access to their digital licences by 2025, interested parties can visit the VicRoads or Service Victoria websites for more information on digital licences.
