New South Wales is accelerating the rollout of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure with the installation of 671 new kerbside charging ports at 391 locations across the state. This initiative, backed by $4.1 million in government funding and an additional $8 million in private investment, is set to expand the availability of public charging options and make EV ownership more convenient, particularly for those in apartments or busy urban areas without access to off-street parking.
The new chargers will be installed by 8 recipients across 16 Local Government Areas and will range from 7 to 75 kilowatts in power. These chargers will be placed in public spaces, including kerbsides and council car parks, providing 24/7 access to EV drivers. The chargers include pole-mounted, pedestal, and kiosk types, offering flexible options for various locations.
This initiative is part of a larger $209 million investment in EV charging infrastructure in NSW, which includes funding for:
- $149 million for fast EV chargers to reduce charging time
- $20 million for destination chargers at regional tourist spots
- $10 million for retrofitting buildings with EV-ready infrastructure
The expansion of EV charging options is designed to give drivers confidence as they transition to electric vehicles, helping NSW meet its net zero emissions targets while also reducing transport costs for households.
