The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in government projects is expanding rapidly, prompting the launch of an updated Digital Assurance Framework and AI Assessment Framework to ensure the responsible application of this transformative technology. These frameworks aim to provide greater oversight and security for AI technologies, especially higher-risk applications such as generative AI.
The Digital Assurance Framework will now require AI projects that have an estimated total cost over $5 million and are considered high-risk to undergo review by an expert AI Review Committee. This committee will assess the ethical, legal, and social implications of such projects.
The new AI Assessment Framework enables agencies to perform in-depth AI risk assessments for digital projects, ensuring they align with the state’s Ethics Policy. This comprehensive approach ensures that AI technologies are deployed with robust safeguards in place, mitigating risks like cyber threats, protecting sensitive data, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
The updated frameworks align with international best practices and form the basis of a national model for AI governance, which has been endorsed by governments across Australia.
These efforts help build public trust in AI technologies, ensuring that their potential for improving public services is realized in a safe and ethical manner.
